Tudor Inset Day

This course aims to suggest cross
curricular approaches to Tudor portraiture in enjoyable
and practical ways. It starts with an introduction to the Tudor
portraits at the National Portrait Gallery and how to get the
most out of looking at them with pupils. This is followed by
a choice of practical workshops:
- Tudor dancing
- Pouncing
- Making farthingales
The day will end in the Tudor
Gallery with a sharing of the artwork, dancing and costumes.

A Twilight Course

This course gives tasters of
the session on offer at the National Portrait Gallery or via
videoconference for Primary school classes. A glass of wine
will be included.

Screen Printing Inset Day
7 March 2008

This course will start by looking
at Andy Warhol's screen prints in the Gallery's Collection (sitters
as diverse as Liz Taylor, Joan Collins and Queen Elizabeth II)
and also on slides. In the practical sessions, participants will
develop a colourful self-portrait in the style of Warhol, based
on photocopies of a photograph using stencilling and experimental
techniques. Work produced by children will be discussed and advice
given on how to work with screen printing in a Primary classroom.

Pop Art Portraits

Artist Alison Kusner will offer
advice and training in simple silkscreen printing techniques.
She will concentrate on how it is possible to make a variety
of prints using the same equipment and basic stencils. This process
is flexible and as it relies on photocopied imagery can appeal
to students who lack confidence in their ability.

This course will introduce the
workshops, slide talks and Gallery talks that we offer to visiting
secondary school groups. It is designed to give teachers the
confidence to develop aspects of their practice that rely on
using works in the Gallery space.
