FREE INSET OPPORTUNITIES FOR TEACHERS

Primary School Teachers

Tudor Inset Day
5 March 2008
10.00 16.00

This course aims to suggest cross curricular approaches to Tudor portraiture in enjoyable and practical ways. It starts with an introduction to the Tudor portraits at the National Portrait Gallery and how to get the most out of looking at them with pupils. This is followed by a choice of practical workshops:

- Tudor dancing
- Pouncing
- Making farthingales

The day will end in the Tudor Gallery with a sharing of the artwork, dancing and costumes.

A Twilight Course
6 March 2008
17.00 19.00

This course gives tasters of the session on offer at the National Portrait Gallery or via videoconference for Primary school classes. A glass of wine will be included.

Screen Printing Inset Day
7 March 2008
10.00 16.00

This course will start by looking at Andy Warhol's screen prints in the Gallery's Collection (sitters as diverse as Liz Taylor, Joan Collins and Queen Elizabeth II) and also on slides. In the practical sessions, participants will develop a colourful self-portrait in the style of Warhol, based on photocopies of a photograph using stencilling and experimental techniques. Work produced by children will be discussed and advice given on how to work with screen printing in a Primary classroom.

Secondary History and Citizenship Teachers

A Twilight Course
1 November 2008
17.00 19.00

This course gives tasters of the sessions on offer at the National Portrait Gallery and via videoconference for classes at Key Stage 3 and 4 and post-16 studying history and/or citizenship. A glass of wine will be included.

  Secondary Art Teachers

Pop Art Portraits
21 November 2007
10.30 15.30

Artist Alison Kusner will offer advice and training in simple silkscreen printing techniques. She will concentrate on how it is possible to make a variety of prints using the same equipment and basic stencils. This process is flexible and as it relies on photocopied imagery can appeal to students who lack confidence in their ability.

Art Teachers' Course
4 March 2008
10.30 15.30

This course will introduce the workshops, slide talks and Gallery talks that we offer to visiting secondary school groups. It is designed to give teachers the confidence to develop aspects of their practice that rely on using works in the Gallery space.
