The x-ray in the centre shows the horizontal woodgrain, and also the contrast between the expressive brushwork in the landscape and the broad, flat brushwork within the oval. The gold under the white paint on the first four letters on the left, ‘AETA’, and the changes in the date on the right, are visible in the infrared reflectogram on the right and not in the x-ray. The strong black underdrawing in the face can also be seen through the paint surface, and no underdrawing is visible under the landscape, all of which indicate the involvement of different artists.
