Much of the x-ray in the centre is obscured by the cradle on the reverse. The brushstrokes in the relatively thick paint of the face are short and quite distinct; they do not look smoothly blended. Old woodworm holes can also be seen in the x-ray as small scattered white dots and there is a split in the wood at the upper-left corner. Retouchings are faintly visible as dark spots throughout the scroll in the photograph taken in ultra violet light on the right.
