Although underdrawing is evident on the surface using microscopy, very little is recorded in the infrared reflectogram on the right: there are some fine lines in the collar and some of the facial features are defined. It is possible to see the way in which the jacket paint extends beneath the porphyry framing, and this is also faintly evident in the x-ray in the centre. The x-ray shows a dense area around the head, which shows that there is a thick lead-based underlayer in the head area.
