Various pentimenti are evident in the x-ray in the centre; for example, along the tops of the shoulders and in the hand on the left. Large amounts of vigorous freehand underdrawing can be seen in the infrared reflectogram on the right. A reserve was left around the drawn position for the fan, which does not relate to the final painted position. There are very fine lines around the embroidery, which have the appearance of metalpoint and may be indented into the priming. This may explain the fine cracks that can be seen in the x-ray in this area.
