In the x-ray in the centre it is possible to see the detailed brushstrokes in areas of thicker paint containing lead-based pigments; for example, in the collar and feathers, and also the highlights in the integrated modelling of the face. Close examination of the x-ray also shows the non-original scratches in the coat. The texturing in the smalt background is also evident, but is much clearer in the infrared reflectogram on the right.
