The modelling of the flesh appears more convincing in the central x-ray than in the paint surface, which is now extensively restored. There is a distinctive craquelure pattern in the paint of the face and surrounding area that is also very evident in the right-hand image taken in raking light. Dense light areas in the x-ray suggest that the white collar was originally painted on both sides of the face and continued further down the right-hand side.
