The wood grain and panel joins are evident in the x-ray image in the centre, as is the large area of repaired damage at the lower edge. The white dots at the edges and in the hat are repaired nail holes that probably relate to a previous hanging system. The paint in the face is softly blended while the costume details are clear and crisp. The underdrawing visible in the infrared reflectogram on the right has clearly been transferred using a pattern. The lines have been confidently applied and are closely followed in the paint layers above.
