The straight wood grain of the two Baltic oak boards on the left side and the undulating wood grain with wider growth rings of the English board on the right are all very clear in the x-ray in the centre. The variety of brushstrokes is also very evident; for example, the modelling in the face was executed with a small soft brush, and a slightly larger brush was used for details such as the collar and cuffs. The photograph taken in ultra violet light on the right shows the residues of old natural resin varnish with greenish fluorescence.
