The difference between the wood grain and paint layers of the top two boards and the lowest board is very clear in the x-ray in the centre. There is a clear line down each edge where the paint appears less dense, which suggests that these areas were left unfinished. Several changes to the composition are visible in both the x-ray and the digital infrared reflectogram on the right, such as the shortening of Unton's sleeve, the colonnade in the small room beneath the musicians in the house, and the extra birds in the trees.
