Blow Up: Sixties Photography Exposed

21 September 2002 - 27 April 2003
Room 32
Free

Inspired by Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1966 film Blow Up which starred David Hemmings as a photographer in “Swinging Sixties” London, this display was based around six newly-acquired photographs by David Bailey. His portraits of Michael Caine, Mick Jagger, Jean Shrimpton, Jane Birkin, Kenneth Tynan and Robert Fraser with Jann Haworth were shown alongside other works by leading photographers, focusing on the icons of sixties film, fashion and pop music.

Besides several portraits of the stars of Blow Up including David Hemmings and Sarah Miles, the display also featured portraits of models Jill Kennington and Melanie Hampshire as well as a group picture of four Beatles wives and girlfriends.
