Letter from Mary Mitford to John Lucas, undated (possibly 1830-1), thanking him for the prints he has sent of her portrait and discussing portraits and printsellers.
  Letter

Mr Haslitt - I have never seen the latter - but his presence would inspire your host - & that would be treat enough. I dined on Saturday at (illegible) Wood where they speak of you with great regard - There was a party of twenty mostly the chief people of the County & I had the pleasure of hearing the family (illegible) greatly praised & admired. They have hung it over the chimney of the dining room - a front light - but still an honorable place, & one where the picture and the artist are sure to be noticed & talked of. How very beautiful the back ground is! I had not seen it before since it was finished I am quite charmed with it as a composition. So are they.

Mr Whittaker ought to have called on you - but perhaps it may be as well that he (illegible) notice the matter to his correspondents & leaves the rest to Mr Colnaghi. Mrs Raggett shall have her print as soon as possible. Adieu my dear Sir -

My father joins in kindest remembrances
& I am ever most faithfully yours
M.R. Mitford
