Letter from Sir Edwin Landseer to Viscount Hardinge, dated 27 January 1866, discussing current work, including the lions for Trafalgar Square, and his descision to decline the Chair of President of the Royal Academy.
Letter in declining this greatness that has been thrust upon me by my too partial friends of the R.A. - as well as the group of wellwishers - out of that (illegible). However I may touched by the Highly flattering opinions expressed by old friends as to my fitness for the P.R.A.'s Chair my common sense tells me to be content and grateful - in my old age - to the (illegible) Father of Mercy
