Letter from Robert Walker, a dealer from Bath, to Sir G. Scharf, director of the National Portrait Gallery, dated 10 February 1860, giving reasons why the portrait of Sir William Herschel which he was offering to sell to the gallery was both important and valuable.
  Letter

get... Mr Colnaghi advised me to ask & take 100 Guineas as if I demanded more Mr Smith would oppose its purchase leaving me to conclude that the Trustees would purchase it at that price.

If you have reason to know that 100 Guineas will not be given for the picture, to quote your own words, it will be useless & unnecessary to proceed further in the matter. The picture having cost me nothing, I can well afford to hold it to the end of my days.

I am Sir your Obedient & Humble
Servant
Robert Walker
