Early Georgian Portraits Catalogue: York

Prince Edward Augustus, Duke of York and Albany (1739-67)

Second son of Frederick Prince of Wales; KG 1752, FRS 1760; entered navy as a midshipman and served under Howe 1758-59; admiral of the Blue 1766; died of fever at Monaco.

This sitter appears with his elder brother afterwards George III and their tutor Francis Ayscough in the group by Richard Wilson (NPG 1165, see Francis Ayscough). Other portraits of York exist particularly in the Royal collection (for which see Millar 1963, 1969 passim), but as he is not in the Dictionary of National Biography a fuller entry is not given here.
