Modelling
In sculpture modelling means the building up and shaping of a soft material such as clay, plaster or wax to create a form. Often making a model is the first stage in the sculptural process, leading to translation into bronze, plaster or lead, through casting. A framework called an armature can be used inside a model, giving support to create a larger work. In painting or drawing, modelling is the technique of giving objects on a flat surface a 3D appearance through shading and highlighting.
