Grisaille
A painting carried out in shades of grey or neutral greyish colours. It can be used as a base for a full-colour painting or to look at the balance of light and shade in a composition (as a sketch for a proposed work). Also a technique used in painting to imitate the rounded relief effect of a sculpture.
