Woodcut

A print produced by the oldest printing technique, employing the surface of a block of soft wood sawn along the grain. The parts that are to be white are cut away with knives and gouges, leaving the design standing up in relief. This is then inked over and pressed against a piece of paper and a relief print produced from the raised surface.
