Gillray Caricatures: British victories

After he was awarded a 'pension', or salary, by William Pitt in 1797, Gillray's prints tended to be supportive of government policy, including its handling of the war against Napoleonic France. Fighting for the dunghill: - or - Jack Tar settling Buonaparte (D12666) shows a British sailor (a 'Jack Tar') giving a skinny figure representing Napoleon a bloody nose after the Royal Navy's overwhelming victory over the French at the Battle of the Nile. Nelson's Victory; - or - good-news operating upon loyal-feelings (D12659) on the other hand, shows the dismay of the opposition, who opposed the war, on receiving the news.
