Lord Mayors of London

The Lord Mayor office was established in 1189 and the elected Mayor is a member of the City of London Corporation. Their main duties are to represent, support and promote British financial sectors. Alongside attending overseas events, they also host foreign ministers and business representatives in the UK. Since 1435, the Lord Mayor of London has been chosen by the Aldermen of the City of London. Voting takes place by a show of hands at Common Hall on Michaelmas Day, 29th September. An individual can serve multiple terms but traditionally they don't serve more than one consecutive term. Dame (Dorothy) Mary Donladson, was the first woman to be elected into office in 1983. The day after being elected into office, a procession takes place from City of London to the Royal Courts of Justice in Westminster. Known as the Lord Mayor's Show, the event has become one of London's most popular events. On the day, the Mayor travels in the city's ornate state coach, one of the oldest ceremonial vehicles still in use.
