20 People in sitter grouping: Metaphysical poets

The Metaphysical Poets was a term coined by the writer Samuel Johnson in his book, Lives of the Most Eminent English Poets (1179-1781), to describe a group of loosely connected English poets in the 17th Century. Philosophical and spiritual subjects were approached with wit and intellect with the poems characterised by the use of conceit. John Donne is the most prominent figure of the poets and considered the master of the metaphysical conceit. It is not considered a genre as the poets weren't necessarily aware of each other's work, or that they had been classified together at the time.
