14 People in sitter grouping: Gunpowder plotters

Remember, remember the fifth of November. Gunpowder, treason and plot. (English Folk Verse, c.1870). To this day the discovery of Guy Fawkes on the 5th November, beneath the House of Lords surrounded by barrels of gunpowder, is commemorated on bonfire night with firework displays and the burning of Guy effigies. The origin of these celebrations stem from the failed Gunpowder plot of 1606, which, led by Robert Catesby, hoped to blow up the House of Lords, with King James VI and the majority of his government inside. The plotters planned to overthrow the government, and in the disarray caused by the explosion, seize power and reinstate Catholicism as the official state religion. The plot had taken about three years to formulate, and would end with the conspirators being executed for treason, as the plot came undone, possibly caused by the misguided recruitment by Catesby of Francis Tresham, who may have written the anonymous letter that uncovered the treasonous activities.
