19 People in sitter grouping: Yorkists

Originally led by Richard, Duke of York, the Yorkists, represented by emblems of white roses and the sun in splendour, would succeed in putting Richard's son Edward, Earl of March (later Edward IV) on the throne of England. With the claim of a superior hereditary right to that of the present King Henry VI, Richard would be killed in battle before his plan to be king could be fully realised. Instead it would be Edward, who, still supported by the Yorkists, was crowned in 1460. As a group of allies, the Yorkists were constantly evolving. They were made up of aristocratic family alliances and those with political ambition to improve their lot through marriage, and by providing arms support for battles, in exchange for titles and positions in court. The most notable of these family allegiances was perhaps the Neville family, led by Richard, Duke of Warwick, known as the Kingmaker. After a Neville uprising in connection with Edward IV's brother George, Duke of Clarence (who was married to Warwick's oldest daughter Isabel) the Yorkist cause almost ceased to exist. However it was reignited by the death of Edward IV, and the ensuing battle for power between Richard III (married to Warwick's younger daughter Anne) and Henry Tudor.
