We are making a New World: Britain 1914-18

Room 30This room focusses on the Great War from 1914 to 1918, with on opposite walls large group portraits of General Officers and Statesmen of World War 1, two of three portraits commissioned by the financier Sir Abraham Bailey to commemorate the role of the army, the navy and politicians in bringing the First World War to a close. Amongst other highlights in this room are a self-portrait with model by Dame Laura Knight and portraits of Emmeline Pankhurst, Dame Maud McCarthy and Lytton Strachey.
