Charles I and Civil War
This room covers the turbulent period of Charles I's reign from 1625 to his execution in 1649, the English Civil War and Oliver Cromwell becoming Lord Protector in 1653. A large group portrait of the Capel Family hangs opposite a large portrait of Charles I probably during a war campaign, and the display includes a number of portraits by Van Dyck. At opposing ends to the room there are two miniature cases, one with miniatures and medals of Cromwell and the Parliamentarians and the other with miniatures of Charles I, courtiers and Royalists.
