As head of the elected UK government, the Prime Minister is responsible for policy and decisions of Her Majesty's Government. As principle figure in the House of Commons, the Prime Minister's responsibilities include appointing members of the government, chairing cabinet meetings and managing the operation of the Civil Service. Until the beginning of the 20th century the office of Prime Minister was unpaid and unrecognized by law, most held the salary, residence (at 10 Downing Street) and office of First Lord of the Treasury. Who the first Prime Minister of the United Kingdom was has been much disputed, but many consider Sir Robert Walpole to be the first, in 1721.
