Pre-Raphaelites
In 1848, against a backdrop of political upheaval and mass industrialization in Britain, 7 artists met in Gower Street, London to found a radical artistic movement. The artists were motivated by a shared aversion to the current academic painting of The Royal Academy of Art and Sir Joshua Reynolds, who they referred to as 'Sir Sloshua'. They sought to revive medieval and early Renaissance art and culture, advocating moral reform and a return to truth to nature. The name 'Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood' was chosen consciously to align their work stylistically with artists working before the Renaissance painter Raphael. The founding artists, including William Holman Hunt and Dante Rosetti, recorded minute detail in bright colours, creating complex compositions with moralizing themes. Sir John Ruskin championed their commitment to moral integrity through the microscopic detail of nature. However, the spiritual and creative integrity they sought, conflicted with the observational emphasis of their work. By 1853, the group had dissolved, although many of the artists remained friends and collaborators for the rest of their lives.
