Harold Rupert Leofric George Alexander, 1st Earl Alexander of Tunis

(1891-1969), Field Marshal

Soldier and Governor General of Canada. In the First World War, Alexander commanded a battalion on the Western Front, winning the MC in 1915 and the DSO in 1916. With Montgomery he supervised the evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940. He became Commander-in-Chief, Middle East, in 1942 and helped to achieve victory in North Africa (1943). After the War, Alexander was appointed Governor General of Canada. He was made an earl on his return to Britain in 1952 and became Minister for Defence (1952-4).
