Sir William Allan was educated at the Drawing Academy of Edinburgh and completed his training in London. He spent the years 1805-14 travelling in Russia, where he painted for the Russian nobility. On his return home, he set up a studio in Edinburgh, specialising in historical paintings. In 1835 Allan was elected to the Royal Academy in London. He served as President of the Royal Scottish Academy from 1838.
