Karl Freiherr von Alten was a Hanoverian professional soldier who joined the British service after the French conquest of Hanover in 1803. He served as a divisional commander during the Peninsular War and at Waterloo, where he was wounded. Many Hanoverians fought with Wellington, notably in the formidable King's German Legion. Von Alten became a Field Marshal in the reconstituted Hanoverian army.
