Henry Fitzalan, 12th Earl of Arundel

(1511?-1580), Soldier and courtier

Sitter associated with 6 portraits
Arundel, a staunch Roman Catholic, was appointed Lord Steward and a councillor by Elizabeth on her accession. Deeply mistrusted, he was too powerful a subject for the Queen to alienate. He fell from favour and led the party which aimed to depose her and crown Mary, Queen of Scots. In spite of the evidence against him, Elizabeth never dared do more than confine him to his house for several periods.
