Benjamin Disraeli, Earl of Beaconsfield
(1804-1881), Prime Minister and novelist; Trustee of the National Portrait GallerySitter associated with 112 portraits
Disraeli was a Tory statesman, becoming Prime Minister in 1868 and again, for a longer period, in 1874. He was born in London into a wealthy Jewish-Italian family and started out as a solicitor before becoming an eccentric writer who dressed in ostentatious clothes. During his time in government, he introduced legislation designed to improve the conditions of the working class, although its success was limited. He also undertook an aggressive imperial policy, including audaciously purchasing a controlling interest for Britain in the Suez Canal in Egypt, which provided the British with a pathway to its colony, India.
