Benjamin Disraeli, Earl of Beaconsfield

(1804-1881), Prime Minister and novelist

Statesman; first made his mark as a flamboyant literary prodigy; gradually asserted his influence on the Tory Party through his outstanding abilities as a politician and orator, becoming Prime Minister in 1868; guided the Second Reform Bill through Parliament; his diplomatic triumphs included the purchase of the Suez Canal, and the Congress of Berlin; one of the greatest statesmen of his age.
