Ernest Bevin
(1881-1951), General Secretary of the Transport and General Workers Union and Labour politician; MP for Wandsworth Central and Woolwich EastSitter associated with 59 portraits
Trade unionist and politician. A farm worker from Somerset, Bevin formed a branch of the Dockers' Union in Bristol in 1910. He worked with Tillett to form the Transport and General Workers Union, and was its first General Secretary (1921-40). A leading organiser of the General Strike in 1926, Bevin was active in negotiating a settlement. In 1937 Bevin was elected chairman of the Trades Union Congress. In 1940 he became an MP and served as Churchill's Minister of Labour and National Service. As Foreign Secretary in Attlee's government (1945-51), Bevin was influential in creating the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) in 1949, and in obtaining aid for Britain under the US Marshall Plan.
