John Bunyan (1628-1688), Author of 'The Pilgrim's Progress'

Sitter associated with 24 portraits
A preacher and religious writer and the author of Pilgrim's Progress, John Bunyan was a tinker by trade, but he turned to religion and became a travelling preacher. From 1660-72 he was imprisoned for unlicensed preaching, and he began writing. In 1675 he was again imprisoned in the bridge-house, Bedford, and here he wrote Pilgrim's Progress, which was immediately popular and became known as the 'lay Bible'.
