Princess Caroline of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel
(1768-1821), Queen of George IVRegency Portraits Catalogue Entry
Sitter in 101 portraits
Married George, Prince of Wales in 1795 but he was already secretly married to Mrs Fitzherbert. He abandoned her after the birth of their daughter Princess Charlotte. Caroline repaid her husband by leading a life of bawdy behaviour, travelling to Tunis and Constantinople. Following her husband's accession as King George IV, she claimed her rights as Queen in 1820. A Cabinet including Lords Liverpool, Sidmouth, and Castlereagh immediately launched Parliamentary proceedings against her for adultery. In July 1821 she was refused entry to George IV's coronation and died a fortnight later of shock. Her body was shipped back to Brunswick, her birthplace.
