He was a younger son of Rev. Henry Francis Cary, vicar of Kingsbury and translator of Dante's Divine Comedy. His mother was Jane Ormsby, sister of Sir Charles Montague Ormsby, Bt. He became a pupil at Henry Sass' art academy, to which he eventually succeeded as head. He exhibited 35 paintings at the Royal Academy of Art. Some of his best known are "Consolation", "A house in Westminster", a portrait of his father, and a portrait of Mary and Charles Lamb.
