Catherine Howard (circa 1518-1542), Fifth Queen Consort of Henry VIII
Sitter associated with 9 portraits
Catherine Howard was the fifth wife of King Henry VIII. She was the daughter of Lord Edmund Howard, a younger son of the 2nd Duke of Norfolk; her birth date and place of birth are unknown. Catherine married Henry VIII in 1540, almost immediately after the annulment of his marriage to Anne of Cleves was arranged. She had, however, had a relationship with Francis Dereham prior to her marriage with Henry. Catherine was also suspected of having an affair with Thomas Culpeper. When her premarital and marital behaviour was uncovered, Catherine was beheaded for treason.
