John Pitt, 2nd Earl of Chatham (1756-1835), General

Sitter in 6 portraits
John Pitt was the eldest son of William Pitt the Elder and the elder brother of William Pitt the Younger. He entered the army in 1778 and his brother appointed him First Lord of the Admiralty later the same year. Chatham retired from the Admiralty in 1794 but remained in the Cabinet, as Lord Privy Seal and then as President of the Council, until his resignation in 1801. His military and political career continued in tandem. Although he was disappointed that the command of the British Army in the Peninsula was given to Sir Arthur Wellesley in 1808, he was given command of the Walcheren campaign the following year, and was made a general in 1812. He served as Governor of Gibraltar from 1820 until his death.
