In 1770, Cholmondeley succeeded his grandfather as 4th Earl of Cholmondeley and entered the House of Lords. He was admitted to the Privy Council in 1783 and appointed Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard, a post he only held for a few months. He was then out of office for twenty-nine years, but in 1812 was made Lord Steward of the Household, remaining in this position until 1821. He was created Marquess of Cholmondeley in 1815.
