Playwright and theatre manager; he wrote or adapted over thirty dramatic pieces. His best known play The Clandestine Marriage was written with David Garrick. While manager of Covent Garden Theatre, 1767-74, he produced both of Oliver Goldsmith's plays. In 1776 he took over the Haymarket Theatre.
