Thomas Francis Fremantle, 1st Baron Cottesloe (1798-1890), Politician

Statesman; elected MP, 1830, and later served under Sir Robert Peel, distinguishing himself as Chief Secretary for Ireland, 1845-6. Fremantle resigned his seat in 1846, became Chairman of the Board of Customs and was raised to the peerage, 1874. As Lord Cottesloe, he interested himself in a wide variety of affairs, from trade to railway safety, and became venerated as father of the House.
