Charles Sackville, 6th Earl of Dorset

(1643-1706), Poet and courtier

Later Stuart Portraits Catalogue Entry

Sitter in 15 portraits
Charles Sackville entered parliament as a young man, but was more interested in books and conversation than politics. The tone of his poems often reflected his own irreverent behaviour; as a friend noted, 'my Lord Dorset might do anything, yet was never to blame'. When he died he had been married three times, and had spent much of his fortune either on self indulgence or charity.
