Head of the house of York, Edward was exiled by King Henry VI in 1459. However, Edward returned to defeat the King and took the crown in 1461. He married Elizabeth Woodville in 1464, who bore him ten children. After a period of military turmoil in 1470 when Edward was forced into exile he returned to defeat his foes at the battle of Tewkesbury (1471). As king he renewed England's wars with France, and reorganised crown revenues.
