Edward Law, 1st Earl of Ellenborough (1790-1871), Politician and Governor-General of India
Sitter associated with 31 portraits
Statesman; Tory MP from 1813; president of the board of control on four occasions and governor-general of India, 1841-4, during which time he annexed Sind and subjugated Gwalior. Although criticised as vain and theatrical, Ellenborough was widely regarded as a fine orator and effective politician, serving in the ministries of Peel and Derby, 1846 and 1858.
