Sir Arthur John Evans (1851-1941), Archaeologist
Sitter in 9 portraits
Archaeologist; while Keeper of the Ashmolean Museum acquired (1894) a share of an estate near Candia (Knossos) on Crete and excavated there (1899-1907), finding and reconstructing extensive Minoan palace buildings. According to a colleague, the drawing failed to capture the sitter's characteristic 'twittering restlessness'.
