Royalist who played a heroic role in the escape of Charles II in 1651. After the Battle of Worcester in September 1651, Charles went into hiding in Shropshire and Staffordshire. His companion, Lord Henry Wilmot, was at nearby Bentley Hall, the home of Jane's brother, royalist Colonel John Lane. Jane had recently obtained a pass to visit a pregnant kinswoman in Bristol. Charles accompanied her as a manservant, under the assumed name of William Jackson. They reached Bristol, then Trent, where Charles set sail for France. Jane's part in the escape was soon discovered and she fled to France later that year, joining the Court in exile. She returned to England only after the Restoration.
