Politician and Leader of the Labour Party (1980-83). Foot, a member of a political dynasty, was a journalist before entering parliament in the Labour landslide of 1945. A Bevanite, Foot was editor of the left wing weekly Tribune from 1948 to 1952, and again from 1955 to 1960. He succeeded Aneurin Bevan as MP for Ebbw Vale in South Wales. Foot was Secretary of State for Employment (1974-6) and under James Callaghan, Leader of the House of Commons. Deputy Leader of the Labour Party (1976-80), he succeeded Callaghan as Leader of the Opposition, a position he resigned three years later after Margaret Thatcher's repeated success at the polls.
