Later Victorian Portraits Catalogue
Sitter in 14 portraits
Birket Foster was an artist whose landscapes are typical of the Victorian age. He was one of the most successful British watercolourists of his generation. Initially an apprentice wood engraver, he soon transferred his skills to landscape draughtsmanship and worked for many important periodicals, including Punch and the Illustrated London News. His illustrations appeared in many novels and poetry books of the period, and he became the most sought after poetry illustrator of the day. Foster was elected as a member of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1862 and went on to show around 400 of his works at the Society's exhibitions. 1862 was also the year that saw publication of Foster's Pictures of English Landscape.
