(1906-1963), Politician; leader of the Labour party

Politician. Gaitskell became a socialist during the General Strike, and was elected as a Labour MP for Leeds South in 1945. He served as Chancellor of the Exchequer (1950-1) and took over the leadership of the Party on Attlee's retirement in December 1955. Gaitskell was a powerful Opposition Leader, who shaped party policy. The legacy of his work was Labour 's return to power in 1964.
